For the fourth year in a row YMCA volunteers have went above and beyond for the youth of our community. Each year the YMCA runs the Strong Kids Campaign to raise money which supports youth programs and financial assistance. The 2008 goal was set at $37,500. The actual amount pledge was $40,760! “The hard work of our campaigners, in combination with the philanthropic nature of this community, are proof that great things can be achieved,” states Suzanne Woodward, YMCA Branch Director. “In times of economic stress for many, I am grateful that people continue to believe in what we do and contribute to our success.”

Money raised from the campaign supports the financial assistance program at the YMCA. The scholarship scale was revised for 2008 in the hopes of providing assistance to more individuals, as well as deeper discounts for larger families. No one is turned away from the YMCA based on inability to pay. Those who are unable to afford the regular rates can complete a basic application to receive a discounted rate. All income information is maintained confidentially with YMCA management.

In addition to the financial assistance program, the campaign supports youth sports, summer day camp, toddler programs and the free use of rooms by community groups. Since the first year of operation in 2004, the YMCA has experienced a 130% increase in participation in youth sports. In 2007, 345 children participated in summer day camp, a huge growth over the 80 who participated in 2004. “As we have grown, the support from the community has grown as well,” states Woodward. “With the help of the campaigners and all donors, we are truly meeting our mission of building stronger kids, stronger families and a stronger community.”
