The world of medicine is always changing, and it is hard to keep up on the latest information. That's why the YMCA and Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville have teamed up for a Health Chalk Talk every other month. Medical professionals will give presentations on a variety of topics to keep you 'in the know' when it comes to healthcare. The talks will last from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m., so bring a sack lunch. Our next discussions will be on Tuesday, February 9th and Tuesday, April 13th. Spend your lunch with us and leave with some beneficial knowledge.

Cholesterol Screening

February is American Heart Month reminding everyone of the importance of taking care of that vital organ. One of the best ways to look out for your heart is to watch your cholesterol. The American Heart Association recommends that everyone 20 years or older should have their cholesterol checked at least every 5 years, but if you have other risk factors it should be done more frequently. On Thursday, February 11th, Blessing Hospital will be performing cholesterol screenings at the YMCA for only $25 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. A 12-hour fast is required, but you can take medication and drink water in that period. The normal cost for this type of screening is $173, so you save almost $150. Registration is required, but walk-in appointments will be available.

Bone Density Screening

Checking your bone density is crucial in helping to prevent broken bones. According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, one in two women and one in four men over age 49 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. Find out if you are at risk for this disease at the YMCA's Bone Density Screening on Thursday, April 29th from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Each screening will last about five minutes, and your results and an explanation of them will be given to you immediately following the testing. This important check-up costs $10 and is offered through McDonough District Hospital. Pre-registration is preferred, but walk-ins are welcome.

Sun Damage Awareness Screening

Prevention is the best medicine to treat cancer. Help yourself stay healthy with a free screening at the YMCA. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States with more than one million skin cancers diagnosed each year, according to the American Cancer Society. McDonough District Hospital will be offering a free Sun Damage Awareness Screening on Tuesday, May 18th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Each testing will take about five minutes and will include analysis of the results immediately following from a health professional. Get tested for these deadly diseases now to catch them before they become a problem.
