Tae Kwon Do is a version of an ancient art of unarmed combat practiced for many years in the orient. Translated from Korean, ‘Tae’ literally means to jump, kick or smash with the foot; ‘Kwon’ denotes a fist; and ‘Do’ means art, way or method. Thus, when taken collectively, Tae Kwon Do indicates the technique of unarmed combat for self defense, involving the skilled application of punches, flying kicks, blocks, dodges and interceptions with the hands, arms and feet to the rapid destruction of an opponent.
The five tenets of Tae Kwon Do are: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and indomitable spirit.
